6. Think positively. Always think about the good qualities and abilities in you. Focus on your strengths instead of weaknesses. Everything starts from your mind, if you think you can then you can and vice versa. Make positive thinking becomes your second habit and your self esteem will build up in no time.

7. Avoid negative view and be optimistic. Always try to see the positive part of any problem first. Wish for the best things in life and believe that every challenge or problem you experience is for the benefit of you to improve. Don?t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In building self esteem, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.

Yaounde ? Cameroon is inviting foreign companies to expand lucrative palm plantations, pitting the country's need for economic development against environmentalists who foresee the loss of important forests.

Since 2009 this West African country has witnessed a sharp rise in interest from companies seeking vast expanses of land for industrial palm plantations in response to increasing global demand for palm oil.

Six foreign-owned companies are currently trying to secure over 1 million hectares (about 2.5 million acres) of land for the production of palm oil in the country's forested southern zone, according to a coalition of environmental organisations.

Jean Kuete, who until December 2011 was Cameroon's minister of agriculture, told journalists last October that palm production is integral to the government's plans for growth, employment and poverty reduction.

"The industrial production of palm oil is a national priority and the many investors in this sector are welcomed," the minister said.

According to information from the agriculture ministry, there is particular interest in land on the flanks of West Africa's highest peak, Mt. Fako, where conditions are good for growing palms, as well as the cheap land stretching through the Southwest and Littoral regions of Cameroon.

OPPOSITION VOICES

But strong opposition is being voiced by civil society organisations and environmental scientists who say the proposed plantations constitute a real danger to the country's fragile ecosystem and the fight against climate change.

In a recent letter addressed to Cameroon's Prime Minister Philemon Yang, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Cameroon called on the government to reject the projects, which they argue will destroy a critical forested zone linking five national parks and protected areas.

"In addition to the direct destruction of flora and fauna, these projects will bring hunger and frustration to the local population," the coalition argued.

According to the government, the companies seeking land include Sithe Global Sustainable Oils Cameroon (SGSOC), which is owned by US-based Herakles Farm and is finalising the acquisition of 73,000 hectares (about 180,000 acres) in the Southwest region.

Sime Darby, a Malaysian-based multinational and the world's biggest listed palm oil producer, hopes to secure 600,000 hectares (about 1.5 million acres) to develop oil palms across the South, Centre, Littoral and Southwest regions.

Siva Group/Biopalm Energy, an Indian-owned group, is in the process of acquiring 200,000 hectares (about 500,000 acres) of land for palm plantations in the South region, where three further companies are also seeking land for the same purpose.

According to government statistics, Cameroon is currently the world's thirteenth largest producer of palm oil. A mixture of smallholders and agro-industrial plantations together produce 230,000 tonnes annually, with 190,000 hectares (470,000 acres) under cultivation.

About half of total production, accounted for by the government-owned Cameroon Development Corporation and companies owned by the French Ballore group, is exported to Nigeria, France and other countries. The government's Rural Sector Development Plan calls for palm oil production to nearly triple, to 450,000 tons annually, by 2020, in part to make up a 150,000-tonne deficit for domestic consumption.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS

"These projects are going to provide direct and indirect employment with an economic multiplier effect, (and) bring more revenue to the state through direct taxes, royalties and utility bills," Kuete said last October. He added that the country's infrastructure would benefit from improvements in roads, schools, electricity and health facilities.

At a meeting in the capital, Yaounde, convened by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in early May, David Hoyle, conservation director of WWF Cameroon, said his organisation was worried that the government was rapidly expanding plantations without a proper strategy for land management. He called on the government to debate the issue and to implement a proper planning process for land use.

"These forests are vital for wildlife, including the African elephant, chimpanzee and drill, all threatened or endangered species," said Samuel Nguiffo of the Centre for Environment and Development, a local NGO. "These animals rely on the forests that would be destroyed to survive."

Nguiffo decried what he said was the growing pressure to convert the national forest - including protected areas - for industrial use.

"If environmental standards are not respected, palm production may have consequences (for) soil erosion on the mountain slopes, water quality, and pollution by pesticide runoff," he said.

CLIMATE THREAT

Patrick Libang, of the Center for International Forestry Research, emphasised the role played by forests in the fight against climate change.

"Trees provide essential ecosystem services like carbon storage, watershed protection, water flow regulation, rainfall generation (and) soil nutrient recycling, mitigating considerably the effects of climate change," he said.

The environmentalists said Cameroon's palm oil deficit could be dealt with through intensive production on current plantations, rather than by expanding the area under plantation.

But Nguiffo noted that although increased greenhouse gas emissions from land converted to palm plantations will be a problem, methane emissions from palm oil mill waste will increase even if production on current plantations is intensified without clearing additional forest.

Methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

Herakles Farm, which owns SGSOC, defended its palm oil projects in Cameroon and elsewhere as environmentally friendly.

Elvis Oben, operations manager of SGSOC, said, "No planting will be done on primary forest or high-conservation-value forest, and buffer zones between the plantation and the high-conservation-value (forest) will be maintained."

Oben argued that SGSOC is engaging with local communities through the planning and development process.

"Environmental impact studies have been made, the necessary land demarcations completed. No local villages are expected to move away from their land," he said.

LOSSES EXPECTED

The environmental impact assessment conducted by the project sponsors acknowledges that some fauna and biodiversity would be destroyed in the course of the development of the project. But it says that measures would be taken to mitigate those losses.

In spite of the protests from environmental organisations, local communities in the project zones have largely embraced the projects. The chiefs who represented their communities at the meeting in Yaounde challenged the civil society organisations that opposed the project.

"The NGOs have no right to speak for us because they have never done anything to help our community out of poverty," said Chief Atem Ebako of Talangaye village, one of the project areas in the Southwest region.

"We need development and we know these plantations are going to bring infrastructural development in our area, like schools, hospitals and especially jobs for our children," he said.

Figuring out the right price for Facebook stock isn't easy

At $38 a pop, nobody liked Facebook. So what is the right price for the world's largest social network?

Facebook Inc. shares have fallen 16.5% since the company's opening day flop May 18, closing Friday at $31.91. Accusations of wrongdoing are flying, as are lawsuits filed by angry shareholders.

Despite the outcry, few question that Facebook is an enormously successful start-up with excellent prospects for growth. Figuring out whether the price is too high, or too low, is the art and science of stock investing ? and there are ample opinions on both sides.

Those who argue that the price is too high say Facebook's slowing revenue growth, difficulty in making money on mobile platforms and saturated user base in the most lucrative advertising markets are all drags on the stock's prospects. The Facebook bulls counter that the dominant social network is essentially a utility with few peers in its ability to target specific demographics.

Which view is right? Independent analysts have begun weighing in, issuing price targets ranging from below $25 a share to nearly $50, while bloggers, day traders and others have begun trotting out valuations that pin Facebook as low as $6 a share.

"We still think it's an incredibly exciting company, but it's still very risky," said Brian Wiesel, senior analyst at Pivotal Research Group. He issued a "sell" rating the day that Facebook started trading, pegging its target price at $30.

Opening at $38 a share put Facebook's valuation at $104 billion, roughly 100 times its 2011 earnings. By comparison, both Apple Inc. and Google Inc. trade at roughly 20 times last year's earnings, which might support the notion that the price was high.

Investors willing to purchase Facebook at current prices, however, are probably ignoring that contrast because of long-term faith in the Menlo Park, Calif., company's growth potential, something Herman Leung of SIG Susquehanna touted in awarding a $48 target price for its stock Monday.

"It's going to be volatile over the next 12 months," Leung said. "But I believe this company will execute and has very good opportunity in front of it."

He pointed out that Facebook's $3 billion in advertising revenue last year represents less than 1% of the $500 billion worldwide spent annually on advertising and sees huge potential for the company to take a bigger share of that.

That idea ? that an investment in Facebook now is getting in early ? is undercut by the fact that, by some measures, it already is a fairly mature company.

Facebook was able to put off its initial public offering longer than other prominent Silicon Valley start-ups. Ordinarily, company employees and investors are eager to go public so that they can cash out their stock awards. Google, for instance, went public six years after it was founded. But Facebook was able to hold out for eight years, thanks in large part to the advent of marketplaces for privately held shares.

Last week, SharesPost, one of two leading exchanges for private stock, said 3.2 million Facebook shares had been sold on its platform between March 2011 and March 2012 at prices between $31.50 and $44.10 a share. Second Market, another such platform, said that it started selling Facebook shares in April 2008 and that 79% of the sellers prior to the IPO were Facebook employees.

Eventually Facebook crossed a securities threshold requiring public financial disclosures for any company with more than 500 shareholders; by the time the social network finally did go public, however, it was much further along the growth curve, bringing in about $1 billion a quarter in revenue, compared with $700 million for Google when it went public in 2004 and $16 million for Amazon.com Inc. in 1997.

What's more, Facebook's revenue increased only 45% for the first quarter of this year. Google, at the time of its IPO, had revenue growing at a 125% clip, a rate far more in line with a high-growth company.

Laura Martin, an analyst at Needham & Co., believes that other metrics set Facebook apart and make conventional financial comparisons less important.

She justifies her "buy" rating and $40 price target by pointing to the extraordinary amount of time users spend on the site and the lack of a serious rival in the social network sphere. Facebook's roughly 525 million daily active users spend an average of 14 minutes a day on the site, triple the amount of time spent on Google.

"We believe that time spent equals money," said Martin, who predicts that Facebook could grow advertising revenue to $14 billion in 2013.

And while revenue growth may be slowing, profit margins are not. Facebook's margins stood at 47.3% in 2011, up from 33.7% in 2009, and it has managed to remain relatively agile, with only 3,500 employees compared with 32,000 at Google and 27,000 at EBay Inc.

"I think this company should be able to convert a larger percent of its revenue to cash flow than anyone else," Martin added.

Facebook critics point to a string of potential negatives: user saturation in North American and European markets, leaving its main user growth in the developing world, which has less value to advertisers; the risk that regulation and privacy laws could undermine its business model; and its inability to enter China, one of the world's most important markets.

There is also considerable concern about Facebook's management structure.

Despite the company going public, Facebook founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg controls more than 57% of its voting shares. And his recent decision to purchase Instagram, a company with no revenue, for $1 billion without consulting Facebook's board is a frightening prospect to pension and insurance fund managers, who like to see conservative business behavior.

But perhaps the greatest concern, and one that is given voice in Facebook's own securities filings, is its difficulty in making money selling ads on mobile platforms such as cellphones and tablets.

"Growth in use of Facebook through our mobile products, where our ability to monetize is unproven, as a substitute for use on personal computers may negatively affect our revenue and financial results," Facebook said in Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Henry Blodget, a former analyst turned finance blogger, figured Facebook should have a valuation between $16 and $24 a share. He said that is still a premium over the price of more established tech stocks, although he left open the possibility that the company could roll out new products to justify a higher price.

In the meantime, analyst Wiesel said, he'll turn to more established companies.

"If you told me Facebook was available at $30 and Google at $600, I'd take Google all day," he said.

Small Business Tips From My Father

I?ve met some of the most renowned entrepreneurs and business experts of our day. Some were disappointing in person, while others lived up to their reputation. But I realized some of the best business lessons I?ve learned were from watching (and sometimes working with) my father in the store he owned for nearly two decades.

I grew up in a family of small-business owners. Both my grandfathers, my two uncles and my dad all operated their own businesses. Most were retail (one uncle had his own accounting practice). One of my grandfathers was well-known in his little corner of Brooklyn, first for his candy store, and later for the liquor store he owned with my uncle.

In the mid-1950s, my dad opened a men?s clothing store with his father in Bayside, Queens, a borough of New York City. It was a time when people shopped in their neighborhoods. Malls didn?t yet exist and shoppers only schlepped into "the city" for special purchases.

Obviously social media didn?t yet exist. But this was the time the precepts of customer relationships were formed. There wasn?t a need to talk to your customers over Facebook and Twitter -- there was plenty of time to catch up when they were in the store.

My dad knew his best customers. He knew when they were struggling and let them pay their bills over time (credit cards were not yet widely in use). He knew when someone was headed off to college and started putting ?appropriate? clothes away ahead of time. He knew who was color blind and needed extra attention matching their shirts and ties. He know who was a pain -- in fact, when one of those folks walked in the store, whoever spotted them first (my dad, Grandpa, brother, or one of the part-time college kids who worked there) would yell out ?BB,? meaning a "ball-busting" customer had entered the store. Forewarned is forearmed after all.

My father passed last week, after a long battle with Alzheimer?s. Among other (perhaps more important) things, he taught me a lot about the right and wrong ways to run a small business -- timeless lessons that any entrepreneur can learn from.

1. Get your family involved.

From the moment one of us kids was old enough to unfold a box, we were put to work at Christmas and the Saturday before Father?s Day. It?s never too early to show your kids what your business is really about -- and why you work so hard.

2. Waste not, want not.

For most of the time my dad ran his store, New York state had ?blue laws,? prohibiting retail businesses from being open on Sunday. And flea markets (swap meets) started becoming popular. My dad took his excess inventory, lowered the prices and headed to the flea market on Sundays, essentially creating a ?second store,? and building brand awareness.

3. Do what you want, not what people expect of you.

By the 1970s, the malls had decimated many neighborhood stores. My dad wasn?t interested in moving his store to the mall (too many hours, too much trouble), and closed up shop. This is a case, perhaps, of learning from his mistakes, since he ended up working for and managing a store in the mall. Doing the work, but not reaping all the awards. Another lesson from this: Don?t be afraid of the unknown.

4. Hire kids in the neighborhood -- and treat them well.

My dad always hired a local high school or college kid to work part time in the store. This led to their friends coming in and shopping there and somewhat increasing the ?cool? factor. Hiring kids might not be the answer for you, but remember when your employees live in the neighborhood, their neighbors are your customers. So if you?re a bad boss, that fact will spread, and likely cost you customers -- and revenue.

5. Treat your customers as if they?re your neighbors -- no matter where they live.

Get to know your customers as individuals. Make an attempt to find out what?s going on in their lives and use that to help you better serve them. These days, unlike my father, you have the benefit of being able to do it both online and offline.
