Shot Pakistani girl recovering fast in UK: father

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - The father of a Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education said on Friday she would "rise again" to pursue her dreams after hospital treatment.

Malala Yousufzai, 15, was flown from Pakistan to Britain for specialist treatment after the October 9 attack, which drew widespread international condemnation.

The father Ziauddin Yousufzai and other family members arrived in Britain on Thursday to help her recovery.

"They wanted to kill her. But she fell temporarily. She will rise again. She will stand again," he told reporters, his voice breaking with emotion.

Malala has become a powerful symbol of resistance to the Taliban's efforts to deny women education. Public fury in Pakistan over her shooting has put pressure on the military to mount an offensive against the radical Islamist group.

"When she fell, Pakistan stood ... this is a turning point," her father said. "(In) Pakistan for the first time ... all political parties, the government, the children, the elders, they were crying and praying to God."

The Taliban have said they attacked her because she spoke out against the group and praised U.S. President Barack Obama.

A cheerful schoolgirl who wants to become a politician, Malala Yousufzai began speaking out against the Pakistani Taliban when she was 11, around the time when the government had effectively ceded control of the Swat Valley to the militants.

She has been in critical condition since gunmen shot her in the head and neck as she left school in Swat, northwest of Islamabad.

She could be at risk of further attack if she went back to Pakistan, where Taliban insurgents have issued more death threats against her and her father since she was shot.

"It's a miracle for us," her father said. "She was in a very bad condition ... She is improving with encouraging speed."

British doctors say Malala has every chance of making a good recovery at the special hospital unit, expert in dealing with complex trauma cases. It has treated hundreds of soldiers wounded in Afghanistan.

Dave Rosser, the hospital's medical director, said she would be strong enough to travel back to Pakistan in a few months' time but it was unclear whether the family would choose to do so.

"She's certainly showing every intention of keeping up with her studies," Rosser added.

Malala's father said he and his family cried when they were finally reunited with her on Thursday.

"I love her and of course last night when we met her there were tears in our eyes and they were out of happiness," he said, adding that Malala had asked him to bring school textbooks from Pakistan so she could study.

"She told me on the phone, please bring me my books of Class 9 and I will attempt my examination," he said.

"We are very happy ... I pray for her."

S.African mine strikes wind down with Amplats deal

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Workers have reached a deal with Anglo American Platinum to reinstate 12,000 miners sacked for an illegal strike, which could end the last big industrial action rocking South Africa's mining sector.

Months of often violent wildcat strikes have cut production in the platinum and gold sectors, raising concerns about slowing economic growth as well as awkward questions about President Jacob Zuma's management of the most damaging labour strife since the end of apartheid in 1994.

"They agreed to reinstate all the dismissed workers on the provision that they return to work by Tuesday," Lesiba Seshoka, spokesman for the powerful National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), told Reuters on Saturday.

Seshoka said he expected workers would return to their posts and "that will mean the end of the strike".

Anglo American Platinum, or Amplats, said in a separate statement it had reached the deal with several unions and offered sweeteners such as a one-off hardship payment of 2,000 rand to facilitate the return. The strike has lasted about six weeks and crippled production.

"Employees who do not return to work on Tuesday ... will remain dismissed and/or be subjected to the illegal strike disciplinary action and will not be eligible for any of the benefits mentioned above," it said in a statement.

While tensions may be winding down at Amplats mines, police in the platinum belt city of Rustenburg were reported to have fired rubber bullets and used stun grenades at a labour rally on Saturday to separate NUM members from other workers who have been fighting a deadly turf war for support.

South African media said the clash took place about 120 km (80 miles) northwest of Johannesburg. Police said they could not confirm the incident.

In recent days, several wildcat strikes over wages and working conditions in the gold sector have come to an end with employers sacking, or threatening to sack, miners striking illegally.

South African labour law requires clear formal processes for strikes and walk-outs. Those that do not go through all the proper hoops are considered illegal, and can result in striking workers being sacked.

Mining firms usually reinstate dismissed workers because it is more expensive to train a new workforce. But some of the job losses could be permanent with employers using the labour strife to shut down marginal mines in South Africa.

ANC ELECTION

The deal at Amplats comes after Cynthia Carroll, chief executive of parent Anglo American, announced her resignation on Friday. She had come under pressure from investors over the firm's lagging share price and continued dependence on strike-hit South Africa.

Anglo owns 77 percent of Anglo American Platinum. Although responsible for 24 percent of its parent's 2011 revenue, Amplats brought in just 8 percent of total operating profit because of soaring costs.

If the workers do return to Amplats, Zuma will have likely weathered a labour storm that threatened to cause problems for him as he seeks re-election as leader of the ruling African National Congress at a party meeting in December.

If Zuma wins the race to lead the party that dominates South African politics, he will be on a path to remain the country's president for another term lasting until 2019.

Zuma has called on wildcat strikers to return to work, pledged to speed up a massive infrastructure programme to improve living conditions in the mining belt and held a high-level meeting with labour and industry trying to break the impasse.

Critics saw these moves as mostly symbolic, doing little to ease the tension and saying hardball negotiation tactics from employers and weeks of lost wages had more of an effect in ending many of the strikes.

Local media said Zuma appeared to have an edge in the ANC race, in which about 4,500 local branch delegates will select the party's leaders. Zuma's foes, who see him as an ineffectual leader, could be emboldened if labour tensions flare again.

Many strikers accuse ANC leaders and their labour allies of worrying too much about their political ties and not showing enough concern for miners working deep underground.

The strikes have highlighted persistent glaring income inequality in South Africa, which has increased since Nelson Mandela's ANC took over following the end of white-minority rule in 1994, promising "a better life for all".

Zuma has come in for particular criticism for not responding faster to the August 16 police killing of 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine, the bloodiest security incident since the end of white-minority rule in 1994.

'Pusher' review: remake guilty of lack-of-substance abuse

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Like Kleenex or cheap plastic razors, there are movies that are instantly disposable.

"Pusher," an English-language, unnecessary remake of the identically titled 1996 Danish cult film from "Drive" director Nicholas Winding Refn (he subsequently made two "Pusher" sequels), is exactly that.

Watching this slick bit of familiar crime drama effluvia, one has the sense of having sat through this exact same movie way too many times before. The odd part, though, is that while "Pusher" is nearly beat-for-beat a remake of Refn's movie, it's more reminiscent of Guy Ritchie's early films with its cast of scruffy London low-lifes.

"Pusher" follows a week in the increasingly desperate life of Frank (Richard Coyle), a smalltime London drug dealer hoping for a big score. To that end, he gets a brick of cocaine on credit from Milo (Zlatco Buric, amusingly old world), the neighborhood crime lord. Before Frank can pay Milo back, however, his own intended deal goes south when the police interrupt the buy. Frank flees, dumping the coke in a river as he attempts to escape the police.

Frank now owes big money to Milo for the missing drugs and spends most of the rest of the movie trying to raise it any way he can, including borrowing from his own impoverished mum. As the deadline for paying Milo back looms, Frank comes to realize that there's no one -- not even his hanger-on best friend (Bronson Webb) or girlfriend (model Agyness Deyn) -- on whom he can really count.

This "Pusher," as directed by Spanish-born Luis Prieto (he previously directed a couple of Italian features), is all style, no substance. With the exception of a scene in which Milo and his cronies wax rhapsodic over a plate of freshly made sweets, there's nothing distinctive about any of the characters or scenes.

Coyle gives a solid performance, convincingly showing Frank's growing panic as the noose around his neck tightens, and Buric displays a certain wily charm along with the menace as the drug kingpin. Deyn, based on her stilted playing here of Frank's stripper girlfriend - c'mon guys, surely, her character could just as easily have been a waitress or a store clerk - is yet another model who probably should stick to the runway and still photo shoots.

To close out on a positive note, "Pusher" has a running time of only 89 minutes. (The movie, which opens theatrically on Friday, has been available via VOD since late last month.)

President Calls Romney a 'Bullsh**ter'

President Obama referred to his challenger Mitt Romney as a "bullsh**ter" in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the latest salvo in a campaign that has seen its share of insults hurled from both sides.

Passed on a message from the young daughter of an editor of the magazine, the president remarked that he "does very in that demographic. Ages six to 12? I'm a killer ? You know, kids have good instincts. They look at the other guy and say, 'Well, that's a bullsh**ter, I can tell.'"

Romney campaign spokesman Kevin Madden responded, saying, "President Obama is rattled and on the defensive. He's running on empty and has nothing left but attacks and insults. It's unfortunate he has to close the final days of the campaign this way."

In truth, both campaigns and their allies have hurled insults and insinuations at one another, with charges ranging from the commission of possible felonies to possibly having a hand in a woman's death to the unconstitutional assumption of the presidency by a noncitizen. A week ago, Romney's son Tagg told a radio interviewer that he felt like running down to the stage and taking a swing at the president during the second presidential debate, a comment he apologized for at the end of the third debate.

When asked about the president's "bulls***er" comment, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said he hadn't yet read the article but argued, "What is true is that trust is very important in this election. The president is someone who says what he means and does what he says." He suggested reporters shouldn't be "distracted by the word" bullsh**ter but should be focused on the larger issue of Romney's trustworthiness.

Pfeiffer cited the myriad shifts in positions Romney has made, including whether or not he would seek a tax cut for the top 1 percent, which he once proclaimed he would do but now says would be offset by the elimination of tax deductions and loopholes for the wealthy.

Questioning Romney's honesty and trustworthiness is indeed is one of the president's main messages on the campaign trail, with the Obama campaign convinced that the president's advantage in whom voters perceive as trustworthy will help sway undecided voters. Knowing of the ambivalence many voters feel about the job the president has done, part of the president's strategy has been to paint Romney as an unacceptable alternative.

In Tampa, Fla., this morning, the president charged that Romney "knows his plan isn't any different than the policies that got us into the mess. So in the final weeks of this election, he's counting on you forgetting that his policies aren't going to work. He's hoping that you won't remember and you'll come down with a case of what we call Romnesia."

After saying that Romney's plan "is likely to create jobs in China, not America," and that "he wants to give millionaires and billionaires a $250,000 tax cut," which will either increase the deficit or force tax increases on middle-class families - charges the Romney camp denies - the president asserted that Romney is "hoping you're going to come down with a severe case of Romnesia just before you cast your ballot."

And lest anyone think Romnesia was merely a fun play on words, the president said, "now, Tampa, we joke about Romnesia, but all of this speaks to something that's really important in this election and that is the issue of trust. When you elect a president, you're counting on somebody you can trust to fight for you, who you can trust to do what they say they're going to do, who can trust - that you can trust to make sure that when something unexpected happens, he or she is going to be thinking about your families, your future. Trust matters."

The pitch comes at the same time the president laments the onslaught of negative TV ads that flooding the airwaves in battleground states. "You've now seen three debates, months of campaign events, and way too many TV commercials," Obama said at a rally today in Richmond, Va.

But lamentations aside, new data from an independent report show that Obama and his allies are responsible for the majority of ads - and the most negative ads - in the final stretch of the campaign. While Republican groups and presidential nominee Mitt Romney have spent $10 million more than Obama on ads this month, it's the president who has actually put more spots on the air - 15,000 more than his rival, according to the Wesleyan Media Project, which tracks media buys.

Wesleyan found that President Obama's campaign has been much more negative, despite his rhetoric on the campaign trail decrying the nasty attacks. The study found nearly three-quarters of pro-Obama ads in October - 73.3 percent - were negative attacks on Romney. Twenty percent emphasized contrasts between the candidates, while 6 percent were positive, the study found. By contrast, Romney and his allies have been modestly more positive, with nearly 12 percent of ads refraining from contrasts or attacks. Thirty-six percent of pro-Romney ads this month have been negative attacks

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Sean "Diddy" Combs was a passenger in an SUV that was hit by another car in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel, but the hip-hop and fashion mogul was not taken to a hospital.

Can Pals help kids get their voices heard

Message from Me isn't the only way Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Labis helping kids communicate. The lab's Hear Me team has come up with Can Pals, a clever twist on the tin can phone that helps students share their stories with the world. Kids record their non-fictional tales on computers or via mics brought in by the Hear Me team, who will edit and upload them to the site and transfer them onto the electronic cans. Afterwards, kids can draw a picture or add some text to a label, which is adhered to the outside.

The Hear Me team then brings them to another school, where the stories are shared with other students, who can pull off the labels and respond to the speakers. The group has also designed CanEX displays that are already at some businesses around town, letting customers catch a glimpse into the lives of local children. CREATE calls it an "empowerment tool for advocacy" -- we can't help but refer to it as This American Life or The Moth for kids. Either way, pretty cool.

Russian opposition issues warning to Kremlin

(AP) ? Russian opposition leaders urged President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday to stop clamping down on dissent and warned they would ask Western governments to freeze assets of Russian officials involved in a spiraling crackdown on the opposition.

Alexei Navalny and other opposition activists who were elected to the opposition's Coordinating Council in a weekend online ballot accused the Kremlin of unleashing a campaign of "direct and forceful pressure against its opponents in rude violation of Russian and international law."

They pointed at what they said was the abduction of opposition activist Leonid Razvozzhayev from neighboring Ukraine as an example of the repression of dissenters. The opposition leaders warned that government officials and law-enforcement officers will face "imminent punishment for their crimes against Russian citizens."

They said the opposition will hold a rally in Moscow in support of Razvozzhayev and other jailed opposition members this weekend.

"The Coordinating Council will demand the arrest of all foreign assets of the masterminds and perpetrators of the abduction, torture and illegal criminal repression against the opposition," the opposition leaders said in a statement.

Russia's top investigative agency formally charged Razvozzhayev on Tuesday with orchestrating riots. The agency said he had turned himself in, but Razvozzhayev and his supporters said he was kidnapped from Ukraine where he was seeking asylum, smuggled back into Russia and tortured into confessing that he organized riots.

Members of a Russian prisoners' rights watchdog, who spoke Wednesday after meeting with Razvozzhayev in jail, said unidentified abductors forced him to make "confessions" by threatening to kill him and his family.

Valery Borshchev and other members of the Public Observation Commission said the masked men who abducted Razvozzhayev kept him in handcuffs and leg chains in a basement for three days, denying him food, water, sleep and a toilet until he signed the confessions.

"They accompanied it all with threats, telling him that they know everything about his children and that his children and his wife will be dead," Borshchev said.

Borshchev's colleague, Lidiya Dubikova, said Razvozzhayev looked anemic and his speech was slow, as if he had been drugged. Razvozzhayev told rights defenders that he feared the men who forced him to make confessions would return.

Amnesty International said Wednesday that the claims about Razvozzhayev's abduction and torture "are extremely disturbing" and urged Russia to "ensure such allegations are promptly, effectively and independently investigated."

Charges against Razvozzhayev stemmed from hidden camera footage aired earlier this month by a Kremlin-friendly TV channel. The documentary claimed that leftist leader Sergei Udaltsov met with a Georgian lawmaker to raise money for organizing riots in Moscow and several other Russian cities. Udaltsov rejected the charges and said the footage was a sham.

Udaltsov already was questioned last week and he fears arrest. One of his aides was arrested last week.

Opposition and rights activists denounced the case against Udaltsov and other activists as a throwback to the times of Soviet-era repression. "The evidence of abduction and torture of Razvozzhayev is like a message from hell," gallery owner Marat Gelman wrote in his blog.

Putin has methodically raised the pressure on the opposition since he was sworn in for a third term in May. Protest leaders have faced interrogations, searches and criminal charges, and the Kremlin-controlled parliament churned out a series of repressive bills to discourage people from joining protests and to introduce new tough restrictions on non-government organizations.

On Tuesday, Russian lawmakers passed a new bill offering a new broad definition of treason, which rights activists say is so loose that it could allow officials to brand any dissenter a traitor. Earlier this month, Moscow declared an end to the U.S. Agency for International Development's two decades of work in Russia, saying the agency was using its money to influence elections ? a claim the U.S. denied.

And despite an international outrage against the two-year prison sentence given to members of the Pussy Riot punk band for an irreverent anti-Putin protest at Moscow's main cathedral, two of them were sent to remote prison colonies this week. The third one was released after a court suspended her sentence.

Watch. Connect. Read.: An Interview with Author David LaRochelle

Today and tomorrow I am featuring the author and illustrator of one of the best picture book read-alouds of the year: It's a Tiger! David LaRochelle (author) is here today, and Jeremy Tankard (illustrator) will be here tomorrow. Thank you, Jeremy and David!

Mr. Schu: Wow! It?s a Tiger is an exciting read-aloud that my kindergartners and first graders love.? What planted the seed for this imaginative tale??

David LaRochelle: I wanted to write a story where the main character was a book that talked directly to the reader. The first version of this story began: ?Thank you for taking me off the shelf. It feels good to have my pages turned.? My wise editor at Chronicle, Melissa Manlove, suggested that the story would work better for young kids without the book being an actual character, and I think she was right.

Mr. Schu: Thank you for creating a character who has a healthy imagination. What can an elementary school student do to strengthen his or her imagination? ?

David LaRochelle:??Playing is one of the most important things that kids (or adults) can do to keep their imaginations strong. When I was growing up, my friends and I put on puppet shows, acted out scenes from our favorite movies (Mary Poppins?and?Alice in Wonderland), staged game shows, made haunted houses and carnivals, and pretended that we were survivors from the Titanic.

As an adult, I still love to play and pretend. My best friend and I are always making up silly stories about cows, and I often get together with friends and family to spend the evening playing board games.

Of course reading is another excellent way to stretch the imagination. Unlike television, reading encourages us to create our own pictures and we become much more active participants in the story.

Mr. Schu: What thought(s) entered your head the first time you saw Jeremy Tankard?s ink and digital illustrations??

David LaRochelle:? When I saw the illustrations for this book I was blown away by Jeremy?s vibrant colors, his rich textures, and the dynamic layouts. I was a little nervous when I heard that he was going to introduce a child into the pictures (I hadn?t envisioned the narrator ever being seen), but showing a child makes the book much more accessible to young readers and was a smart decision on Jeremy?s part. Even though I was originally hoping to illustrate the book myself, I?m very thankful they chose Jeremy instead; his illustrations bring a level of excitement to the book that I could have never achieved.?

Mr. Schu: I have a metafiction section in my school library. Do you have any favorite books about books??

Mr. Schu: Please complete these sentences:?

Reading is?magic. It can take us anywhere.

Picture books are?for everybody. Some of the most beautiful/funny/creative/touching stories ever written are inside picture books. The artwork can be breathtaking. No one is ever too old to enjoy these wonderful books.

Mr. Schu, you should have asked me about?my pumpkins. Every October I have fun carving elaborate jack-o?-lanterns. Here?s a photo of a tiger-inspired pumpkin that I carved last week. You can find other pumpkins from past years at my website.?

I'm giving away one copy of It's a Tiger!

Rules for the Giveaway

1. It will run from 10/22 to 10/25.?

2. You must be at least 13.

3. Please pay it forward. :)?

Borrow It's a Tiger! from your school or public library. Whenever possible, please support independent bookshops.?

Japan's New Justice Minister Resigns After Mob Ties Surface

THE MAINICHI SHIMBUN, THE JAPAN TIMES (Japan)

Worldcrunch

TOKYO - Japan's justice minister Keishu Tanaka submitted his resignation Tuesday amid allegations of past links to a Yakuza crime syndicate, reports The Mainichi.

Japan Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told a Cabinet meeting that Tanaka had left his post due to health problems but his resignation comes after a report in the Shukan Shincho weekly magazine alleging close ties to a Yakuza organization.

The magazine said Tanaka had acted as a matchmaker for a senior member of Japan?s third-largest crime syndicate, the Inagawa-kai, nearly 30 years ago. He was also said to have given a speech at a party thrown by a mob boss, reports the Japan Times.

The 74-year-old minister admitted the links but explained that he was not aware of the groom?s Yakuza connections or the nature of the event at the time, saying he had only found out about it later on.

Tanaka also admitted shortly after his appointment that his party branch had accepted a 420,000-yen donation from a company run by a Chinese national. In Japan, accepting funds from foreign nationals is illegal if done so knowingly.

This scandal comes only a month after Noda brought him into the Cabinet in a reshuffle on Oct. 1.

Tanaka is the second minister to resign since Noda assumed office in September 2011.

Communicate You Are Motivated to Succeed | Business 2 Community

Upon being asked, ?What motivates you?? a smile came to my face. Without giving a second thought I replied, ?Setting goals and exceeding expectations!?

As a salesperson, working to exceed expectations is a natural and every day occurrence. In the corporate sales arena, cash bonuses and trips are awarded at the end of the year to the top performer. It becomes a very competitive and motivating game for all!

But many people who become entrepreneurs are not wired in the same way nor are they familiar with the benefit of setting goals or the continued striving to surpass them. It is the starting point that begins to transform your effort into your own business graph. Charting milestones enhances motivation.

As you hit the set targets, notice the underlying associated achievements. This gives you a quick picture as to what works best and the most direct route to where you wish to go. Once you see movement in your progress, motivation to do more begins to build.

Why is communicating you are motivated to succeed so important?

It becomes an inherent piece of your personal brand. Without motivation, you will get left behind if you aren?t willing to advance forward daily. When it comes to attracting new clients, few people are willing to invest with someone not motivated or dedicated to continual learning. Prior to handing money over, clients want to feel confident you will perform your best on their behalf.

How do you communicate motivation in a positive light?

It is your communication style that will convey and encourage others you are motivated to succeed for the benefit of all.

1. Portray enthusiasm

Your body language, facial expressions and gestures all contribute to the excitement in the sound of your voice. Speak to how you uniquely provide services. Ask yourself, ?Will others in my presence be attracted to what I have to say??

2. Speak enthusiastically

The cheer in your voice will speak volumes that you enjoy what you do and are dedicated to achieving the best outcome possible. Enthusiasm is contagious. As you speak, you will excite others to take you seriously and carefully consider your service. At the same time, you will attract those who are similar in nature and will find great partners with whom to work. This too will motivate you further to keep forging forward.

3. Review previous successes

Should you be new to business, review other successes you previously enjoyed. How did they come about and what made them special? What can you do to recapture these in your business?

As your business matures, just a glance at your business graph moving upward will motivate you to study what worked best and to establish goals never previously considered possible. The more you achieve, the more motivated you become to do more.

And just when you believe you can?t think of another thing, confer with others to see what they are doing. Consider developing a community or adopting a community for social good. Not everything will be a huge success, but the more you are willing to explore and try, the more you will achieve.

It is the achievements that will propel motivation and new success leading you to the Smooth Sale!

Metairie's Cenacle Retreat House closing in 2013; property to be ...

The Cenacle Retreat House in Metairie plans to close in 2013, and the property will be sold (Photo by The Times-Picayune archive)

The Cenacle Retreat House in Metairie, for more than a half century a destination for spiritual nourishment, plans to close in 2013. The Roman Catholic order of nuns running it will sell the 20-acre property. Finances and a declining number of nuns were blamed for its demise.

?It?s a deep sorrow for me, as it is for many people,? Sister Rose Hoover, the Metairie Cenacle?s superior, said Monday.

Since it opened in 1958 at 5500 St. Mary Street, the Cenacle has functioned as a lakefront escape for thousands of people, mostly women, who visit its grounds of magnolia, live oak and white crepe myrtle trees for weekend retreats, daily programs and individual spiritual direction. The property includes 52 guest rooms, a chapel, meeting hall, library, dining room and parlors, as well as the convent.

?Usually people kind of get into a rhythm of making a yearly retreat,? said Sister Gloria Haagensen, the ministry coordinator.

But the number of nuns living and working at the Cenacle has fallen from more than a dozen in the late 1960s to seven last year and now just four, reflecting a national trend in religious orders. Where once the nuns provided what amounted to free labor for almost all tasks, the few remaining focus on administrative and spiritual duties. The Cenacle now pays a lay staff of some 20 people -- with help from many volunteers -- to cook, clean and keep up the buildings and grounds.

Individuals making three-day retreats are asked to pay $225, but the actual cost is closer to $350, Haagensen said. The Cenacle has held fundraisers and solicited gifts, yet it could no longer make ends meet.

?The retreat ministry by itself has never paid the costs of the retreat house,? Haagensen said. ?We?ve always relied on the generosity of our retreatants.?

Hoover said the order, officially the Religious of Our Lady of Retreat in the Cenacle, has been studying, discussing and praying over the Metairie mission for some time. The provincial headquarters in Chicago came to recommend closing it, and the governing office in Rome eventually approved.

The Cenacle said it will fulfill its scheduled commitments, which run through mid-August. It plans to sell the property, although exactly what will become of the buildings and land is not known.

In 1995, when the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception closed its convent adjacent to the Cenacle, the real estate was sold for $1.4 million and converted into a 12-lot residential subdivision, Holy Land on the Lake. The money was to be put into a trust fund for the nuns? medical care.

As for the remaining Cenacle nuns in Metairie, Hoover said they likely will be assigned to the order?s other nine missions in the U.S. and Canada.

It will be Hoover's third and last time to leave. Raised Presbyterian in Gainesville, Fla., she converted to Catholicism in New Orleans and made her perpetual vows in the Metairie house?s chapel in 1985. She has served two previous stints here, returning most recently just after Hurricane Isaac struck in August.

?While it is a time of great sadness for us, it is also a time of gratitude,? said Sister Mary Sharon Riley, the order?s province councilor in Chicago. ?We are grateful to God who has allowed us to minister to so many people for so many years.

?We have been blessed to be part of the greater New Orleans community -- and beyond -? for such a long time.?

Tackling Breast Cancer

How the University of Florida is fighting against one of the deadliest diseases in the nation.

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Every 13 minutes, a woman dies from the disease, totaling nearly 40,000 women a year.

The seriousness of breast cancer can?t be understated. Yet according to the University of Florida Academic Health Center?s Breast Center, one of six Centers of Excellence in Florida, death rates from the disease are steadily decreasing. More than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors live in the U.S.

Increased awareness, improved treatments and early detection have been key, and UF is helping attack the disease head-on.

In the community, UF has raised awareness through events such as the Pink Pumpkin Fest held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the lab, UF researchers launched more than 4,200 clinical research studies in the last four years with vital results.

For instance, studying how women?s genes and the environment affect cancer could lead to new drugs and treatments that prevent and kill the disease, says Lindy Brounley, UF Shands Cancer Center communications director.

Patients can extend long-term survival and cut down tumors through a UF-pioneered autoimmune response induced by radiotherapy. The process vaccinates women against their own cancer.

And UF researchers are leading the world?s first surveillance imaging trial to monitor breast cancer patients at a high risk of cancer spreading to their other organs, Brounley says.

See how else UF has been involved this year:

Looking to the future, UF Academic Health Center researchers are studying how to diagnose breast cancer through minimally invasive procedures and how groups can foster proper prevention behaviors among women.
