Single Channel Retail Sales Are Dying

In an ever-changing retail market, multi channel retail methods are replacing the traditional methods of retail sales. Almost all successful, large, chain retail stores have multiple channels integrated into one system available to employees, vendors and customers. Consumers want to find the product they are looking for. If the particular store they visit is out of stock, they want other options available to make their desired purchase. Multi channel retail allows the customer to find what they are looking for either at another store or online. Single channel retail limits the ability of retailers to meet their customers? needs.

Why Single Channel Retailing is Dying

Single Channel Retail is dying because more and more businesses are going online, providing their customers with an easy alternative to the typical POS at a retail store. Most large chain retailers have a website where all of the products they sell in their stores are available, as well as other products that are only available online. The way to make online sales more effective is to integrate this system with the physical stores. Make it easy to find out if a product is available online if it is not available at the store. Customers still need to be engaged at the store level POS, but making products available online and integrating the online system with the stores will drive sales and increase customer satisfaction.

Effective Loyalty Systems

In order to effectively retain the business of returning customers, a loyalty system has to be integrated across all channels in a multi channel retail business. Rewards for customers returning to your business have to create enough incentive for the customer and be redeemable both in the stores and online. An integrated system that makes customer information available in the stores themselves as well as online is crucial.

Web Storefront

Multi Channel Retail is the Answer

Multi channel retail creates a new venue from which customers can buy products. Instead of using the internet primarily for promotion and advertising, maximize profits by creating a website where customers can purchase products. With an integrated retail system in place, buying products online is easy and extremely cost efficient.

New Innovations in the Retail Sector

The retail industry becomes a little more digitized every day. In order to stay in front of this trend and make it work for your business to drive sales and profits, your business must be limber enough to stretch and bend with your customer?s preferences. The capability to sell products not only in stores but also online and in kiosks and other venues is the key to your business?s flexibility. But multi channel retail is only as effective as its integrated retail system is efficient. Online presence is a must for every retailer now to be competitive.? With new innovations come the increasing need to invest in an integrated retail system that fits your business and drives your sales.

Isabulle's favorites ? Using Computers It isn't Rocket Science

These days it can be strange to hear men and women say, ?I?m just not pc literate,? as computers have evolved from traditional scientific calculators to simple point-and-click type devices. We suspect in which today?s ?computer illiterates? are people who haven?t taken some time to experiment with such a equipment. And we strongly feel that spending just twenty minutes with one could turn the most adamant scientific caveman into any one those who have fun wreaking chatroom havoc on the Internet right now.

Today, one just needs to learn how to manipulate a mouse, strike a few buttons over a keyboard, or really just turn the one thing on to use a pc. It?s hard for some folks to believe, but the personal computers of this generation nearly run themselves! To keep things interesting, let?s investigate just how little knowledge these kind of thousand-dollar machines actually demand.

Can an absolute newbie operate a computer not understanding how to use a computer mouse button or keyboard? Let?s assume that a computer is set up to function on voice command ? sure! Speech command software permits users to tell a computer what to do and the pc responds by satisfying the user?s commands. Although it?s pretty brand-new and still under development, voice directed technology has already infiltrated client service related systems.

Think back to the last moment that you paid a bill over the phone. Rather than speaking to a human being, chances are that you spoke to some computer that not just responded to what you stated and followed the actual commands that you offered it, it also inquired you for more information for example your full name or perhaps credit card number. In cases like this, a person (such as yourself) operated a computer without knowing it!

Can an utter newbie sit down at the computer without knowing the way you use one? Assuming that a computer is set up to operate on touch command * the answer is again, yes! Touch command software program allows users to literally touch things on a monitor and also tell the computer how to handle a finger. Called ?kiosks,? these plans are already in use worldwide at ATM machines, job centers, and in wellness monitoring systems.

None a mouse nor a keyboard is needed. A computer user just needs to touch a variety of boxes on a monitor to control a computer. Certain, the programming behind such technology will be extensive and superior, but to the user, it makes computer make use of less intimidating and also plain easy.

Obviously when we talk about working a computer, we imagine more involvement compared to speaking on the phone or perhaps touching things over a screen. The above pictures were just a couple of instances of how far computer technology is continuing to grow, and how far we have now pushed ?user-friendliness? to its restrict. Eventually, the keyboard and also mouse will have to may play a role when computer newbies have to work with a single as a cash register, as being a hotel booking system, or as a library?s listing system.

These specifications don?t make personal computers any less simpler to operate, but they will not make them that much more difficult either. So much of today?s software is designed to allow for the experience of a new consumer that anyone may get connected to the Internet, send out an email message, and also download an MP3 file within the very first five hours of shopping for a personal PC.

Many of the top touch screen laptop may end up being uncovered here, although people can certainly in addition find rugged laptop not to mention notebook laptop if you pay a visit to many of our web site

PFT: Revis says Jets' lockerroom 'is in disarray'

San Francisco 49ers v San Diego ChargersGetty Images

Free agency has come screeching to a halt, but there are still some interesting names available on the open market.

Here?s a breakdown of the top ten players left unsigned on the PFT Hot 100.

1. Offensive tackle Marcus McNeill ? Released by San Diego on March 13, McNeill visited the Lions a day later but left without a contract. He was rumored to have meetings lined up with the Falcons and Chiefs, but they apparently fell through. While McNeill has two Pro Bowls and 82 starts at a premium NFL position on his resume at age 28, medical concerns have clearly hurt McNeill?s market value.

2. Offensive tackle Demetrius Bell ? Bell has drawn interest from the Redskins and Cardinals, and will visit the Packers later this week. Like McNeill, Bell is a 28-year-old starting-caliber left tackle who?s been plagued by injuries. Bell?s medical concerns aren?t as significant as McNeill?s, however, and it would be surprising if he wasn?t signed soon.

3. Linebacker David Hawthorne ? A beastly run defender, Hawthorne?s market appeared to be established when Stephen Tulloch (Lions) and Curtis Lofton (Saints) were signed. Hawthorne remains available, however, after visits with Detroit and New Orleans proved to be leverage plays by those teams. Adam Caplan did report on Tuesday that the Seahawks and Hawthorne ?continue to be in communication,? so perhaps he?ll re-sign with Seattle.

4. Linebacker London Fletcher ? Fletcher still hasn?t signed, but it?s been widely assumed that he?ll head back to D.C. Perhaps that?s why no other teams have seriously inquired. As Alper noted a couple of days ago, league-imposed cap penalties against the Redskins have affected negotiations with Fletcher.

5. Defensive end Andre Carter ? Carter racked up double-digit sacks in 14 games last year, but he hasn?t been signed because he?s still ?limping heavily? after a late-season quadriceps tear. Carter should find work quickly once he?s healthy.

6. Defensive end Matt Roth ? The Bengals are Roth?s only known free-agent visit, and their interest seems to have cooled after signing twin draft busts Jamaal Anderson and Derrick Harvey. Roth isn?t a bad pass rusher and sets the edge as a run defender. He can also play linebacker in a 3-4. It?s only a matter of time before he catches on somewhere.

7. Defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin ? Franklin?s career peak was receiving the 49ers? franchise tag in 2010. His 2011 market was surprisingly slow, and he?s now going on age 32. Franklin is coming off a disappointing season in New Orleans, struggling for playing time. The 2011 game tape may be turning off teams.

8. Offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie ? The Giants have already cut ties publicly with McKenzie, their starting right tackle since the 2005 campaign. Going on age 33, he may have to wait for training camp to be signed.

9. Defensive end Luis Castillo ? A productive but injury-prone 3-4 defensive end, Castillo has visited the Patriots and Chiefs in free agency, but likely was offered only the veteran?s minimum after missing all but one game last season. The Chargers also have an offer on the table to keep him. Castillo is only 28 years old with plenty of starts on his resume.

10. Wide receiver Braylon Edwards ? The Jets have expressed some interest in the top wide receiver left on the market, but it?s believed Edwards is still rehabbing from the knee surgery that forced the 49ers to give up on him in December. Edwards is 29 years old. He can separate from defensive backs with the best of ?em when healthy and is an underrated blocker, but untimely drops and off-field concerns have tarnished his image as an NFL player.

Yolanda Hadid Joins The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

Yolanda Hadid is the latest member of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The rumors are true, Camille Grammer will not be returning. I cant say I am surprised, she was extremely boring to watch this season. Yawn fest. Camille has finally confirmed that she will not return for season 3, but denied speculation that it was because she didn’t want to “expose her personal life anymore”. “I can’t say too much at this moment, but we couldn’t get it worked out. I’ve had so much fun with the franchise, but I guess the producers and I couldn’t come to an agreement.” She went on to say that she would have liked to remain a regular on the series, saying: “I think I would have done it, definitely.” Well that is all BS according to the rumors that began soon after season 2 ended. She didn’t act like someone who enjoyed being on a reality TV show and it was clear to everyone. I loved her in season 1 but I think they went with the right decision. The next reality victim is set to be model, Yolanda Hadid, the wife of Grammy-winning producer and songwriter David Foster. Sources claim [...]

UGA researchers use nanoparticles, magnetic current to damage cancerous cells in mice

Athens, Ga. Using nanoparticles and alternating magnetic fields, University of Georgia scientists have found that head and neck cancerous tumor cells in mice can be killed in half an hour without harming healthy cells.

The findings, published recently in the journal Theranostics, mark the first time to the researchers' knowledge this cancer type has been treated using magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle-induced hyperthermia, or above-normal body temperatures, in laboratory mice.

"We show that we can use a small concentration of nanoparticles to kill the cancer cells," said Qun Zhao, lead author and assistant professor of physics in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Researchers found that the treatment easily destroyed the cells of cancerous tumors that were composed entirely of a type of tissue that covers the surface of a body, which is also known as epithelium.

Several researchers around the globe are exploring the use of heated nanoparticles as a potential cancer treatment. Previous studies also have shown that high temperatures created by combining magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with strong alternating magnetic currents can create enough heat to kill tumor cells. Zhao said he is optimistic about his findings, but explained that future studies will need to include larger animals before a human clinical trial could be considered.

For the experiment, researchers injected a tiny amounta tenth of a teaspoon, or 0.5 milliliterof nanoparticle solution directly into the tumor site. With the mouse relaxed under anesthesia, they placed the animal in a plastic tube wrapped with a wire coil that generated magnetic fields that alternated directions 100,000 times each second. The magnetic fields produced by the wire coil heated only the concentrated nanoparticles within the cancerous tumor and left the surrounding healthy cells and tissue unharmed.

Zhao said the study paves the way for additional research that might investigate how to use a biodegradable nanoparticle material similar to magnetic iron oxide for other roles in fighting cancer, such as carrying and delivering anti-cancer drugs to the tumor site.

"When the cancer cell is experiencing this heated environment, then it becomes more susceptible to drugs," Zhao said.

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles could be useful in improving the contrast in magnetic resonance imaging at a cancer site, he said. In other words, the nanoparticles could help physicians detect cancer even if the cancer is not visible to the naked eye with an MRI scan.

"The reason I am interested in using these magnetic nanoparticles is because we hope to one day be able to offer diagnosis and therapeutics, or theranostics, using a single agent," Zhao said.

The research was supported by a National Cancer Institute Head and Neck Specialized Program of Research Excellence at Emory University.

The paper's additional authors are Luning Wang, Rui Cheng, Leidong Mao, Robert Arnold, Simon Platt and Elizabeth W. Howerth, all of UGA, and Zhuo G. Chen of Emory University.

A review by The Associated Press of campaign records and other documents reveals hints about the vast national network of business leaders bringing in millions to elect Romney. The same month that Ross invited friends and colleagues to his home, for example, Romney's campaign received $317,000 from nearly 150 people who share Ross's exclusive ZIP code on Florida's east coast, according to Federal Election Commission records. That mysterious surge of donations outpaced all contributions to Romney during the previous year from the wealthy Palm Beach area, when the campaign collected $270,000 over nine months. Romney got $21,000 more from residents there in February.

Unlike President Barack Obama, Romney's campaign will not identify his major fundraisers, and federal law doesn't require him to. The AP identified several of Romney's "bundlers" through interviews, finance records, event invitations and other publicity about campaign events. The lack of transparency by the Romney campaign prevents voters from knowing who wields influence inside the GOP frontrunner's campaign and how their interests might benefit if he is elected. Romney is in California this week for at least five private fundraisers.

Bundlers are typically well-connected business and banking executives who tap their professional and social networks to steer individual contributions from others to the campaign in amounts that can range from $10,000 to well over $500,000. Experienced bundlers can reach these highest amounts quickly. Persuading 25 couples to attend a VIP reception with the candidate for $2,500 each ? the maximum an individual can give a campaign ? raises $125,000 in a single evening.

Even in the era of "super" political action committees, which can pull in millions of dollars in unlimited and effectively anonymous contributions to support candidates, bundlers are their own campaign forces. Unlike super PACs, which can't legally coordinate with candidates, bundlers raise large amounts deposited directly into a campaign's bank account ? money that can be spent to pay for salaries, get-out-the-vote efforts and advertising.

This presidential election is expected to be among the costliest ever. Obama's re-election campaign has raised just over $151 million. His campaign released the names of its bundlers in late January, and the list illustrates how important these elite fundraisers have become. More than 440 bundlers collected at least $75 million to help Obama win a second term, including 61 people who each raised at least half-million dollars.

Fundraising has been a bright spot for Romney during the bruising GOP primary. Romney has built a potent organization that has pulled in nearly $75 million. Two-thirds of the total ? nearly $49 million ? came from people who gave the $2,500 maximum, which can be indicative of contributions pulled together by bundlers. Just $6.5 million, or 9 percent, came from supporters who gave $200 or less. The emphasis on top-tier donations indicates an active network of fundraisers who are targeting high-end contributors.

"Romney is less focused on small donors than any other candidate at this stage of the campaign in recent memory," said Michael Malbin, director of the nonpartisan Campaign Finance Institute. "And that is parallel to a larger problem: He has not yet excited the passions of the kind of people who give small contributions or volunteer their time."

One prominent Romney supporter, Lewis M. Eisenberg, said that even with the rise of super PACs like Restore Our Future, which helped Romney pay for important advertising, the campaign is still dependent as ever on "hard money" that pays for salaries, state organizing, television ads, direct mailings and other expenses.

"It's fair to say we still haven't seen the clear impact of all the changes," said Eisenberg, co-chairman for Romney's campaign in Florida and John McCain's finance chairman in 2008. "What we do know is you still need the hard dollars that go to the campaign ? to deliver the direct message of the candidate and the campaign."

Federal law requires only that candidates identify bundlers who also are registered lobbyists, which the Romney campaign has done. Sixteen lobbyists representing a wide range of interests raised nearly $2.2 million for him last year, according to FEC records. Andrea Saul, a Romney spokeswoman, said the campaign discloses all the information about its donors required by law.

The AP's review identified dozens of people who fit the profile of a bundler for Romney. Many are listed on invitations for Romney fundraising events, assigned to mine their business and personal networks for maximum campaign contributions.

Several were the same mega-donors who gave million-dollar contributions to Restore Our Future, the independently run super PAC supporting Romney. Seven of the 15 millionaires and billionaires who gave $1 million to the super PAC have either hosted Romney fundraising events or joined his finance committees. They include Tiger Management head Julian Robertson, hedge fund founders Paul Singer and John Paulson, and businessmen William Koch, Francis Rooney and Frank VanderSloot.

Former Bain Capital executive Edward Conard, whose anonymous $1 million donation to the super PAC in August spurred controversy until he came forward publicly, was one of the lead fundraisers for a December Romney event in New York. Conard declined to detail his fundraising role for the campaign but said he "wouldn't have a problem" if the campaign identified Romney's bundlers.

New York's financial institutions are the hub of Romney's fundraising, ties that were forged during Romney's rise in the 1980s as founder of Bain Capital, the Boston-based private equity firm he directed until 1999. Over the past year, he has made regular stops at restaurants, hotels, law firms and private clubs in New York to collect donations. He is regularly joined by wealthy investment, hedge fund and banking executives who have signed on to run fundraisers.

One major Romney donor, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss fundraising practices behind the scenes, acknowledged that Romney financiers who serve as event hosts or are listed as members of campaign finance committees are likely Romney's bundlers and generally asked to raise a certain amount.

Romney's largest source of donations is employees at Goldman Sachs, the New York based investment and securities firm. More than $426,000 flowed into the Romney campaign in 2011 from individuals who identified themselves as Goldman Sachs managers or employees, and the Romney campaign has listed several senior or former Goldman Sachs executives as lead fundraisers of its campaign events, including John Whitehead, the firm's former chairman.

One top Goldman Sachs fundraiser is Muneer Satter of Chicago, a managing partner who heads the firm's Mezzanine Group. Satter was a co-chairman of Romney's national finance committee during his unsuccessful 2008 presidential bid. Satter was a lead fundraiser for at least two events for Romney in 2011, one in New York in December and another in Chicago in May, and gave $195,000 to the super PAC supporting Romney. Satter did not return several telephone messages from the AP.

Eisenberg, a senior advisor to the Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts private equity fund, would not say whether he was a bundler. But his activities bear the hallmarks of a major fundraiser.

A former finance chairman of the Republican National Committee and a $500,000-level bundler for McCain in 2008, Eisenberg was a lead fundraiser for Romney events in New York in October and December, and he hosted a reception at a New York law firm in late September. He also gave $25,000 to the super PAC supporting Romney, adding to a $100,000 donation to the group in February from KKR founder Henry Kravis. Donors listing KKR as their place of business gave $36,000 to Romney's campaign in 2011.

Two other major sources of Romney's campaign money are the New York investment bank JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Credit Suisse, the international bank based in Switzerland.

The former chairman of JPMorgan, William B. Harrison, was a lead fundraiser at a New York event for Romney in mid-December. Two executives of JPMorgan subsidiaries, Andy Sriubas and Reinier Prijten, were listed at events for Romney last fall. And four senior JPMorgan executives ? among them the bank's vice chairman, James B. Lee and former Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, now the firm's director of Florida, Central American and Caribbean operations ? hosted a separate December fundraiser for Romney.

In the two weeks before and after the December fundraisers, the Romney campaign received more than $60,000 in contributions from JPMorgan employees, according to federal election records.

The chairman of Credit Suisse in New York, Eric Varvel, was listed on invitations for two fundraisers for Romney in New York in October and December, as well as for a New York fundraiser earlier this month. The Romney campaign reportedly took in nearly $2 million from that event and another in New York that day.

Donors who listed their employer as JPMorgan accounted for $305,000 in contributions to Romney last year, according to campaign records. More than $283,000 came from individuals who identified Credit Suisse as their place of employment.

Bobbie Kilberg, chief executive officer of the Northern Virginia Technology Council in suburban Washington, helped collect more than $2.2 million and said she is "profoundly proud to be identified as a person who raises money for Mitt Romney."

Kilberg said she has worked with a team of Romney supporters who have held a series of fundraisers for him, including a June 29 event at the Ritz Carlton in Northern Virginia, which brought in nearly $350,000. An Oct. 25 gathering at her home in McLean, Va., raised $356,000. That was followed by another fundraiser that collected more than $1.5 million.

Daniel Dumezich, a partner with the Winston & Strawn law firm in Chicago, said he held fundraisers for Romney in Indiana. He also helped organize volunteers and supporters for the campaign. Dumezich said his goal was to inspire others to support Romney, encouraging them to write checks and to find others to give money. Dumezich said he doesn't mind being identified as supporting Romney. But he said he doesn't have an opinion about whether Romney's campaign should also disclose how much he and others are raising.

"I haven't thought about that," he said.

Learning best when you rest: Sleeping after processing new info most effective

ScienceDaily (Mar. 23, 2012) ? Nodding off in class may not be such a bad idea after all. New research from the University of Notre Dame shows that going to sleep shortly after learning new material is most beneficial for recall.

Notre Dame psychologist Jessica Payne and colleagues studied 207 students who habitually slept for at least six hours per night. Participants were randomly assigned to study declarative, semantically related or unrelated word pairs at 9 a.m. or 9 p.m., and returned for testing 30 minutes, 12 hours or 24 hours later. Declarative memory refers to the ability to consciously remember facts and events, and can be broken down into episodic memory (memory for events) and semantic memory (memory for facts about the world). People routinely use both types of memory every day -- recalling where we parked today or learning how a colleague prefers to be addressed.

At the 12-hour retest, memory overall was superior following a night of sleep compared to a day of wakefulness. However, this performance difference was a result of a pronounced deterioration in memory for unrelated word pairs; there was no sleep-wake difference for related word pairs. At the 24-hour retest, with all subjects having received both a full night of sleep and a full day of wakefulness, subjects' memories were superior when sleep occurred shortly after learning, rather than following a full day of wakefulness.

"Our study confirms that sleeping directly after learning something new is beneficial for memory. What's novel about this study is that we tried to shine light on sleep's influence on both types of declarative memory by studying semantically unrelated and related word pairs," Payne says.

"Since we found that sleeping soon after learning benefited both types of memory, this means that it would be a good thing to rehearse any information you need to remember just prior to going to bed. In some sense, you may be 'telling' the sleeping brain what to consolidate."

Slain teen's friends say he never picked a fight

MIAMI (AP) ? Wearing a hoodie. Listening to music and talking on his cellphone. Picking up Skittles for his soon-to-be stepbrother. Friends say that's how they would have imagined 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on a Sunday afternoon.

Starting a fight? Possibly high on drugs and up to no good? No, friends say that description of Martin from the neighborhood crime-watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed black teenager doesn't match the young man they knew.

"There's no way I can believe that, because he's not a confrontational kid," said Jerome Horton, who was one of Martin's former football coaches and knew him since he was about 5. "It just wouldn't happen. That's just not that kid."

Martin was slain in the town of Sanford on Feb. 26 in a shooting that has set off a nationwide furor over race and justice. Neighborhood crime-watch captain George Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is Hispanic, claimed self-defense and has not been arrested, though state and federal authorities are still investigating.

Since his death, Martin's name and photographs ? in football jerseys, smiling alongside a baby, and staring into the camera in a gray hoodie ? have been held up by civil rights leaders and at rallies stretching from Miami to New York demanding Zimmerman's arrest.

On Friday, President Barack Obama called the shooting a tragedy, vowed to get to the bottom of the case, and added: "When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids."

That sentiment was echoed by NBA star by Dwyane Wade, who along with his Miami Heat teammate LeBron James tweeted photos of themselves in hoodies in a show of solidarity.

"As a father, this hits home," said Wade, who has 10- and 4-year-old sons.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Friday that Martin's killing reflects "the classic struggle of our time" and said it echoes the slaying of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was murdered in 1954 while visiting Mississippi by a group of white men. No one was ever convicted, but Till's killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

Jackson said he will speak at a Sanford-area church Sunday and then attend a rally in the city Monday.

An Orlando criminal defense attorney who says he represents Zimmerson told CNN on Friday that his client isn't racist and the facts will show he acted in self-defense after a fight with the teen.

"I don't believe that George Zimmerman's a racist or that this was motivated by a dislike for African-Americans," said Craig Sonner.

Since the slaying, a portrait has emerged of Martin as a laid-back young man who loved sports, was extremely close to his father, liked to crack jokes with friends and, according to a lawyer for his family, had never been in trouble with the law.

The son of divorced parents, he grew up in working-class neighborhoods north of Miami's downtown. He and his father, a truck driver, were active in the Miramar Optimist Club, an organization that runs sports and academic programs for young people. Tracy Martin, the teen's father, coached his son's football team.

The boy was a swift athlete, according to a friend, and played a range of positions up to about age 14. After he stopped playing, he remained active in the organization, volunteering six days a week from June through November of last year to help run the team's concession stand.

Martin cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken wings alongside his father at the stand. He loved talking to the kids, asking them what position they played and whether they were good, Horton recalled. He would call the mothers "Ma'am," and if they had a stroller or an item they needed help with, Martin stepped in.

"Everyone out there loved him," Horton said.

Martin was tall and lanky ? only 140 pounds, according to the family's attorney ? and his nickname was "Slimm."

The teen spent a big part of his week living with his father in a one-story, peach-colored home. Neighbor Fred Collins Jr. said he would see Trayvon Martin outside every week mowing the lawn and trimming the trees. The teen also helped Collins' son learn how to ride a bike.

"He was coaching him, giving him words of advice, encouragement," Collins said.

No one answered the door on a recent afternoon, and a child's plastic tricycle sat in the driveway.

Tracy Martin often recounted how his son saved his life. The elder Martin had begun heating up some oil to fry fish and fell asleep. The grease caught fire, and when Tracy Martin awoke and tried to put out the flames, he spilled the oil on his legs, severely burning himself. Trayvon Martin pulled his father out of the home and called 911.

Martin's parents kept a close eye on him, but they didn't have to be too strict, since he stayed out of trouble, Collins said. However, he had recently been suspended from school for five days for tardiness, his English teacher, Michelle Kypriss, told the Orlando Sentinel. School officials did not respond to a request for comment.

Martin's father was not happy and grounded the teen for the duration of the suspension.

Trayvon "knew he was wrong," Horton said.

Under state privacy law, only serious felonies appear on juveniles' public criminal records, and Martin did not have one. Citing the same law, Sanford police Sgt. David Morgenstern said he could neither confirm nor deny the family's statement that Martin had never gotten in legal trouble.

Martin dreamed of becoming a pilot. He had flown on school vacations to various places around the country with his mother, skiing in Colorado one year, going off to Texas another.

"There's no little black kids that want to be pilots," Horton joked with him when he was about 13.

"Well, I'll be the first one," the teen replied.

At Dr. Michael M. Krop High School, where Martin was a junior, he was on the quiet side, but he would sit in the middle of the classroom, participate in class and especially liked math.

Schoolmates remembered his humorous side.

"Brrrrian!" he would call out, rolling his r's as is done in Spanish, whenever 16-year-old Brian Paz got a phone call from his Colombian mother, the friend recalled.

"I'd just burst out laughing," Paz said.

Paz and other friends said Martin liked rap music and funny movies. He had written some lyrics, though he hadn't had a chance yet to perform them. Martin was especially a fan of a student musical group at his school called Bison. He had two of the group's pins on his backpack and helped spread the word about shows.

John Emmanuel, 17, said the group was about encouraging young men to be strong, independent leaders.

"That's how we liked to think of ourselves," Emmanuel said.

Martin had gone up to Sanford to visit his father's fianc?e, who lived there with her young son. Friends said Martin regarded the boy as his little brother and had been looking forward to watching the NBA All-Star game with him that weekend.

On that Sunday, Martin went out to get candy and an iced tea at a convenience store and was walking back to the fiancee's townhouse. Zimmerman, 28, spotted him and told a police dispatcher: "This guy looks like he is up to no good ? he is on drugs or something."

After the shooting, Zimmerman claimed that Martin attacked him as he was returning to his truck.

But Martin's friends said they find that hard to believe. They said they had never seen him fight at all.

"As far as attacking the guy without him attacking him, no way," Horton said.

Xbox 360's Comcast Xfinity TV app in beta testing, won't count against data caps when it launches

Image
We're still waiting for the Comcast Xfinity TV app to appear on our Xbox 360 dashboards, but word is its beta tests have expanded to cover more Microsoft and Comcast employees, and it could launch as soon as the next week or so. In case you're wonder exactly what its capabilities will be when it will arrives, a post over at AVSForum points out a support page that's already live and details both the requirements for service and content available. Customers that have Xbox Live Gold and both internet and video services from Comcast will be able to log into the app with their ID and view video on-demand (no live TV) including free videos, national broadcasters and premium channels. That includes access to HBO Go (which will already have an app) and additional content from Max Go, as well as other premium stations -- basically the same lineup currently available on the Xfinity website. Also notable is confirmation that the cross-provider content search Microsoft is so proud of will apply here, and that any video viewed through the app won't count against those 250GB data caps Comcast has in place. Hit the link below for all the answers currently available, we'll wait until its actually launched to try out the promised Kinect voice and gesture control features.

[Thanks, Tyler]

That?s right ? there is a correlation between tobacco use and colon cancer. I?m not suggesting that all colon cancer is tobacco-related. There are other factors involved, but researchers and doctors are discovering a commonality between the two and stating that tobacco use can lead to this type of cancer.

As with all secondhand smoke, it is reasonable to assume that secondhand smoke is also tobacco use and exposure is going to cause the same ills as smoking cigarettes yourself, because you ARE ?smoking? if you are exposed to it through secondhand smoke.

I want to share some facts with you about this type of cancer, as provided from the American Cancer Society:

1. Most people who get colon cancer have no family history of the disease. However, if someone is 50 or older, colon testing should be considered.

2. If there is a history of colon cancer or certain medical conditions, testing may need to be done prior to age 50. Consult a doctor about family history.

3. You can have colon cancer and not even know it. Most people with colon cancer have no symptoms and normal looking stools.

4. Colorectal cancer and colon cancer are often interchangeable terms. Colorectal refers to the colon and rectum.

5. The 5-year survival rate of colon cancer is 90% when detected early.

6. Finding and removing polyps prevents some people from ever getting colon cancer.

7. Screening can result in the detection and removal of colorectal polyps before they become cancerous.

8. Colon cancer can be prevented with routine screenings, a healthy diet and an active lifestyle.

9. Even though colorectal testing should begin at age 50, education about colorectal screening can begin NOW!
