By msnbc.com and NBC News

A gunman opened fire on a Middletown, N.Y., courthouse Wednesday, wounding one court officer before he was shot and killed himself, reported NBCNewYork.com.

The gunman reportedly had legal troubles and is believed to have had a longstanding dispute with the city mayor, a source told NBCNewYork.com. He allegedly went to the city?center to confront the mayor.

Eyewitnesses told Middletown's Times Herald-Record that a man in a brown hooded jacket with a scarf covering his face drove up to City Hall on a motorcycle at about 9 a.m. Wednesday. After circling Middletown City Hall, he parked next door at a bank parking lot, and ran up the steps of the City Hall holding a shotgun, witnesses told The Times Herald-Record.

Once inside City Hall, which is connected to Middletown City Court offices, he fired one shot at the door of the court, hitting a court officer in the arm, reported the newspaper, before another court officer shot him to death.

The officer's injuries were not life-threatening, police told NBCNewYork.com.

The gunman was not identified. There was no immediate comment from the mayor's office.
